Research Statement

My research integrates molecular oncology, cancer epidemiology, and translational medicine to understand the causes, mechanisms, prevention, and treatment of cancer. A major focus of my work is esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, one of the most common cancers in Kashmir. Through laboratory investigations, population-based studies, and clinical collaborations, my research has identified key environmental, lifestyle, genetic, and epigenetic determinants of ESCC

Current research efforts focus on cancer metabolism, epigenetic regulation of angiogenesis, cancer cell migration, biomarker discovery, treatment outcome prediction, and implementation of risk-based cancer screening and early detection strategies. The long-term goal is to translate scientific discoveries into effective interventions that reduce cancer incidence, improve patient outcomes, and inform public health policies in high-risk populations.

Research Group Information

The Cancer Biology and Epidemiology Laboratory at the Department of Biochemistry, University of Kashmir, conducts multidisciplinary research spanning cancer biology, molecular epidemiology, biomarker discovery, cancer prevention, and public health interventions. The laboratory combines molecular, cellular, genetic, epigenetic, and population-based approaches to address clinically relevant questions in cancer development and progression.

Current projects focus on esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, cancer metabolism, epigenetic regulation of angiogenesis, cancer cell migration, treatment response prediction, and risk-based screening of upper gastrointestinal cancers. The group actively collaborates with national and international institutions, including WHO-IARC and leading cancer research centres, and provides training opportunities for M.Sc., Ph.D., and postdoctoral researchers. The laboratory welcomes motivated students and collaborators interested in advancing cancer research and translating discoveries into improved patient care and public health outcomes.
